Part / Whole — New Stories on Ceramic Surfaces
A ceramics gathering held at KİK Space under the lead of Umut Kambak.
We entered a way of working that makes the flawed visible rather than hiding it, building a new and considered whole out of broken forms. The texture, the colour and the limits of ceramics were all rediscovered in this workshop.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Part / Whole took place as part of the KTSM Mahallende programme, run in collaboration between Kale Design and Art Centre and BASE. At the first gathering of the year we worked with ceramics at KİK Space, led by Umut Kambak.
The workshop started from a simple question: does a broken form have to be repaired? Together with the participants we tried a way of making that does not hide the flawed but puts it on show. Joining shattered surfaces back together, we made the line of the break part of the composition rather than concealing it.
Throughout the process we worked on the texture, the colour and the limits of ceramics. Each participant built a new whole out of their own fragments; the resulting pieces were surfaces unlike one another, each carrying the story of its own break.
